Media and Current Events

1.       Compare a TV news report and a newspaper report on the same subject.

  •    Which is more informative?

  •    Which do you find more interesting?

  •    Which gives you greater freedom and which is easier to refer back to?

  •    Which is more Islamic?

  •    Which media do you prefer? Why? (key Stage 3-4)

2.     To promote an interest in current events, particularly those relating to Islam, suggest that your child keep a diary of newspaper and/or magazine clippings. They could pick one, two or more topics to follow. This will help them to study topical events such as the Israeli occupation of Palestine and the war in Chechnya. By following events and pasting articles in a scrapbook in chronological order they will learn not only about the event itself but also about documentation and keeping records. And, most importantly, it will give them an understanding of the struggles Muslims face in the world today, how Islam is portrayed in the media and it will give them a greater sense of how they fit into a wider, global community of Muslims, Insha’Allah. (key stage 3-4)

3.     Bias in the media:

  1. Get your child to compare reports on a certain topic in different newspapers. What differences can they find? How do differences in the use of language and terminology impact the reporting? Does the reporting suggest an ‘agenda’ on the part of any particular newspaper? How does all this affect us as readers? Do they think that we are manipulated by the media? (key stage 4)
  1. Identify the different subject areas which are in a given newspaper. I.e. National Politics, International News, Sports, etc. Make a chart to identify how many articles fit into each subject area. What does this tell you about the Society that we live in? (key stage 3-4)
