RAMADAN ACTIVITIES During
Ramadan, encourage your child to do a project around food – there are many
areas to explore according to their age and interest. Just a few examples are
given here to get you started: 1)
Halal and Haram. Younger children could make posters showing what is
halal and haram (free food magazines from supermarkets are full of pictures to
use). Older ones could explore Qur’anic verses, and the reasons why haram food
is harmful for our bodies. 2)
Children could explore the variety of foods eaten for Suhur and Iftar in
different countries and cultures, with practical experience in actually
preparing some of these foods. This could strengthen links with neighbours and
friends who can help and advise the children with their work. Use your library
too for cookery books from around the world. 3)
Another idea is to learn more about dates – how and where they grow, the
varieties, costs, etc. What does the Qur’an have to say about dates? This work
could also link in with Islamic stories about dates such as those found in the
Islamic Foundations’ range of children’s books (e.g. Love at Home –
‘The Three dates, ‘The Mother’s Desire’). There are also Hadith
involving dates which older children could research (generally under manners of
eating and drinking). -Umm
